Volvo has started implementing a new 112 mph speed limit on all of its new cars, highlighting the Swedish automaker’s position as the world leader in road safety.
In addition to the speed limit, each Volvo car will now also come with a maintenance key, which allows Volvo drivers to set additional limits on the maximum speed of the car (for example before lending their car to other family members or to younger, inexperienced drivers).
“We believe that a car manufacturer has a responsibility to improve road safety,” said Malin Ekholm, manager of the Volvo Cars Safety Center.
“Our speed limit technology and the dialogue it initiated correspond to this reflection. The speed cap and Care key help people to think and realize that speeding is dangerous, while providing additional peace of mind and supporting better driver behavior.
The maximum speed limit is controversial, with some observers questioning the right of automakers to impose such limits through available technology.
Still, Volvo Cars believes it has an obligation to continue its tradition of being a pioneer in the discussion of the rights and obligations of automakers to take action that can ultimately save lives, even if it means losing customers potential.
He says the problem with speed is that above certain speeds, on-board safety technology and smart infrastructure design are no longer enough to prevent serious injury and death in the event of an accident.
This is why speed limits are in place in most western countries, but speed remains ubiquitous and one of the most common causes of death in traffic. Millions of people still receive speeding tickets each year.
Research shows that, on average, people misunderstand the dangers of speeding. As a result, many people often drive too fast and have poor speed adaptation to the traffic situation.
