Universities around the world are organizing to offer a lot of online content at the start of the new school year. Cambridge became the first British university to put all student lectures online for the coming academic year on Tuesday , highlighting the far-reaching changes the coronavirus is making to higher education institutions around the world.
A model favored by many universities
The 800-year-old university said in a statement that it is ” likely that social distancing will continue to be necessary ” next year, which begins in October and ends in the summer of 2021. It also said the decision would be reviewed if the official guidelines for coronaviruses change. ” Conferences will continue to be available online and it may be possible to accommodate smaller teaching groups in person, as long as it meets social distancing requirements, ” said the university, says New York Times.
This statement suggests that lessons could be held in small groups, as long as it is possible to respect physical distance. The University of Manchester will offer the same device the next school year, but only for the first quarter.
In the United States, California State University has declared that the courses will be held almost exclusively online this fall, with a few exceptions for clinical courses in the nursing program or certain scientific laboratories. In Canada, McGill University in Montreal has also announced that most of its courses will take place online. Other schools plan to adapt in different ways: one-way roads or the obligation to wear the mask in class and in certain places of life such as dining rooms.
